Peris teaching women in the Outreach programme

Peris Wanjiku Kamau graduated from Kimlea in the year 2000.  She is the second born among six brothers and sisters.  Her family was affected by the tribal clashes that took place in the Rift Valley region of Kenya between 1994 and 1995 during which time they fled from the area and came to find shelter in Kawaida in the neighbourhood of Kimlea.  Her parents have since then engaged in casual work as compared to farming in the Rift Valley before, in order to feed and educate their children.  Soon after her training in Kimlea, Peris was employed in Kimlea as an assistant teacher and Outreach Programme Coordinator.  She is currently the main breadwinner of her family besides educating her two younger brothers in Secondary School.  Peris is grateful for her training in Kimlea and  often spends the little money left for her personal expenses from her monthly salary to help some of the poorest families with daughters in Kimlea.

Peris is also the Chairperson of the Youth Group of her village.  Every Sunday she meets a group of 30 to 40 boys and girls aged between 15 and 25 to whom she gives counselling sessions.  She usually passes on to them everything she learns in Kimlea regarding morals, sex education and HIV-Aids awareness.  Thus she is a leader not only at Kimlea, but also in her village where she has become a role model.
