Kimlea
is a girl's technical training centre, which was started with the aim of helping
women and girls working in the coffee and tea plantations of Limuru area of
Kenya to raise their standards of living.
Most of the women
working in the plantations have very little education and no alternative source
of income. Consequently, they find themselves in a
vicious poverty cycle which is difficult to break. They pick tea as a source of livelihood,
a seasonal job which earns them around Kshs. 4 per kilo. Each woman is able to pick an average of 30 kilos a day. The money
is barely able to meet basic family needs. As a result, their children
join them at an early age to help bring food to the table, thus discontinuing their
education. Unlike other more privileged families there is scarcely any
opportunity for further education among the tea pickers, for want of school
fees.
In order to help solve this problem, Kianda
Foundation
started Kimlea. Its main aim is to provide technical skills for
women and girls so that they have an alternative source of income and can raise
the standard of living of their
families and consequently that of the society around them.
