In order to get the first students for the 2 year course, Frankie Gikandi, the Principal of Kimlea, went out to the tea plantations to talk to the tea pickers. There she spent hours convincing them of the need to educate their daughters and the benefits that would be derived from their education. Eventually, 23 girls started the course but only 11 managed to finish. Frankie returned to the tea plantation to recruit more students. With the passage of time and the success of the girls who had passed through Kimlea, recruitment no longer presented a problem. However, the girls who came from very poor backgrounds were unable to pay more than nominal fees and Kianda Foundation set out to look for alternative funding. The help of supportive donors has made a bright future possible for the girls.
